
The Buffalo News supports parental involvement, literacy and lifelong learning in the classroom through its many educational programs. Classroom Connection is a service that allows parents to get involved on a daily basis by listening to updated classroom messages either on the phone or on the web. Newspaper in Education provides reduced-rate copies of The Buffalo News along with subject and grade-specific lesson plans that have been aligned to the NYS Learning Standards. Much of the curriculum has been written by local educators on topics from the rich history in Erie and Niagara counties to energy conservation to the history of The Buffalo Bisons and sports writing. For many students, NiE is the first and only exposure they will have to the daily newspaper. The Stock Market Game provides students an opportunity to learn about the world of finance. Elections 2008 teaches students the importance of exercising their right to vote through a mock election. The Editorial Cartoon Contest gives students a chance to express their opinion in the form of a cartoon. NeXt, our Wednesday teen section is written by area teens that have completed an internship at The News. The News also sponsors the Spelling Bee, Books for Kids, Share a Story contest, and various junior sports writers’ camps.
